This holiday season, The Regional Municipality of York suggests giving your home the gift of clear pipes by keeping fats, oils and grease out of your drains.
Proper disposal of fats, oils and grease can save your home from costly repairs. When poured down drains or toilets, they eventually cool and can clog the pipes taking used water from your home to the treatment plant.
Fats, oils and grease are byproducts of cooking. These include:
-
Salad dressings
-
Cooking oils (includes deep frying oils)
-
Sauces and gravies
-
Milk and cream
-
Marinades
To keep your home’s pipes in good working order, remember three key steps: Cool it. Scrape it. Green bin it. Liquid cooking oil that does not solidify can be dropped off in a tightly sealed container, no larger than four litres in size, at one of York Region’s waste depots for recycling into biodiesel.
Keep your drains clear by:
-
Refraining from using hot water, soap or other chemicals to prevent fats, oils and grease from hardening in the pipes; the use of chemicals to help fats, oils and grease pass through sewer pipes is illegal in York Region
-
Keeping fats, oils and grease out of the drain as water and oil do not mix; they will eventually cool in the pipe, harden and can cause a blockage
-
Using waste fats and grease to make suet for birds; restaurants and industries having large amounts of grease can have it recycled into animal feed or biodiesel
