The University of Waterloo reminds students, faculty and staff of the following safety tips from the Government of Ontario to help keep you safe during severe weather:
-
Take shelter in an enclosed building or vehicle if you hear thunder.
-
Avoid water, high ground, isolated trees, power lines and picnic shelters.
-
If no shelter is available, go to a low-lying area away from tall, isolated objects. Crouch with your feet together. Do not lie down.
If you are indoors:
-
Stay away from windows, skylights and glass doors.
-
Avoid running water, as lightning can enter through pipes and plumbing.
-
Remain indoors for at least 30 minutes after thunder ends.
-
Seek shelter in a basement or interior room if conditions worsen.
