The Regional Municipality of York is launching a campaign to inform expectant and new parents of the free and confidential health advice they can receive from York Region Public Health staff through a telephone information line, Health Connection.

Expectant and new parents can call Health Connection and speak with public health professionals and receive health information about:

  • Pregnancy: Eligibility for the Nurse-Family Partnership, a no-cost program where public health nurses are available to visit young, first-time mothers during their pregnancy and throughout the first two years of their child’s life in the privacy of their own homes
  • Breastfeeding: Expectant and new mothers can book an appointment with a breastfeeding clinic, have breastfeeding questions answered or receive tips for successful infant feeding
  • Parenting: Learn about the Healthy Babies Healthy Children Program, a home visiting program where eligible parents are connected with a public health nurse and a family visitor to receive information, support and connections to community resources
  • Your child’s growth and development: Receive tips that will support your child’s healthy development
  • Mental health: Learn about support and programs, including the Transition to Parenting group, to help navigate the adjustment to parenthood

Health Connection also offers confidential telephone and email support by providing information on other public health-related topics, resources, services and community programs, including:

  • Infectious disease: Disease cases and outbreak, publicly-funded vaccines, school immunization program and immunization records
  • Sexual health: Sexual health clinics that provide contraception, pregnancy testing  and testing for sexually transmitted infections (STI)
  • Sexually transmitted infection: Reports on STI or post exposure of blood-borne infections
  • Health protection: Food safety, rabies, safe water and health hazards
  • Dental health: Dental care for children and youth

Health Connection provides evidence-based health information to York Region residents, organizations and health care providers at no cost. Residents can contact Health Connection Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. by calling 1-800-361-5653, TTY 1-866-512-6228, email accessyork@york.ca or visit york.ca/healthconnection
