Doors Open is an annual event in Markham during which places the public wouldn’t normally have access to are opened up. These are often heritage sites. Each site includes its own programs that are entertaining, fun and learned.
The theme of Doors Open this year is “Towards a Fair and Just Society.” I am very pleased that Loving Sister and Chinese Family Services of Ontario are participating because both have made a significant contribution to social justice. Their exhibits will be at the Markham Village Train Station, on Main Street Markham north of highway 7 and south of 16th Avenue.
Kugan Subramaniam and I have also created an exhibit for the Train Station. We interviewed families that have been in the area for generations to discuss how it has changed and what it was like to live in Markham decades and even centuries ago. We also interviewed women who have made a huge difference to the city through their initiatives supporting Down Syndrome children, arts and culture, politics and society. Their stories are unique – a special window into the lives of amazing people whose lives are inspiring and give us reason to get involved in Markham to make a positive difference.
Hope to see you at the Markham Village Train Station and other sites on the day of the event and in years to come!
