Nine Toronto beaches will open on Saturday
Toronto is ready for beach season! Nine of Toronto's swimming beaches will officially open to the public on Saturday, June 2. Lifeguards will be on duty at these beaches, which will remain open until Labour Day. Open swimming beaches are supervised from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
"City of Toronto beaches are great places to relax, escape the heat and get active," said Mayor John Tory. "I encourage residents to take advantage of the opportunity to go outdoors and cool off this weekend."
"Swimming and watersports are a great way to get active and be healthy," said Councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon (Ward 32 Beaches-East York), Chair of the Parks and Environment Committee. "Toronto beaches are a favourite destination for families in the summertime and I encourage everyone to come out and cool down!"
Toronto boasts some of the best swimming beaches around. Eight of Toronto's 11 beaches have been awarded Blue Flag certification, meeting high standards for water quality, environmental management and education, safety and services. The nine swimming beaches opening this weekend are:
• Bluffer’s Park Beach (Blue Flag)
• Centre Island Beach (Blue Flag)
• Cherry/Clarke Beach (Blue Flag)
• Gibraltar Point Beach (Blue Flag)
• Hanlan’s Point Beach (Blue Flag)
• Kew-Balmy Beach (Blue Flag)
• Sunnyside Beach
• Ward’s Island Beach (Blue Flag)
• Woodbine Beach (Blue Flag)
Lifeguards will be on duty as of June 16 at Marie Curtis Park East Beach and Rouge Beach.
Getting to Toronto's beaches
Many of Toronto's beaches are accessible by TTC. Visitors are encouraged to take public transit, cycle or take the ferry. The TTC has implemented a new accessible bus service to the Scarborough Bluffs this year. The 175 Bluffer’s Park service will run between Kennedy Station and Bluffer’s Park Beach approximately every 15 minutes during the daytime and early evening on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays until Saturday, October 6.
Parents and caregivers are reminded to supervise children at all times and stay within arm's reach of children who are in or near the water.
