Lights, camera, action – Doors Open Toronto lineup announced

The 19th annual Doors Open Toronto, presented by Great Gulf, announced its lineup of buildings, city-wide walking tours and special programs for May 26 and 27. The weekend celebration of architecture features more than 130 building participants, including over 55 new sites, a speaker series, music program and more. Details are now available at http://www.toronto.ca/doorsopen

This year's theme, Film: The Great Romance, explores the city's film and television industry and the spaces where actors, designers, carpenters, makeup artists, animators, and writers hone their craft and help make Toronto North America's third largest screen-based production centre.

"Doors Open Toronto gives residents an opportunity to discover many of the significant sites that collectively shape our city's identity as a film centre," said Mayor John Tory. "From historic cinemas, film, television and digital media studios to the post-production houses, artist-run centres and film training schools, I invite residents to explore Toronto's built architecture through the eyes of our city's thriving film industry."

"Toronto is recognized globally for its architectural landscape featuring some of the most dynamic award-winning buildings and iconic designs," said Madeline Zito, Vice President Public Relations at Great Gulf. "We are delighted to return as presenting sponsor of Doors Open and invite everyone to join us as we see inside some of the most interesting buildings that celebrate film.”

“Events like Doors Open Toronto are important economic drivers for Toronto," said Councillor Michael Thompson (Ward 37 Scarborough Centre), Chair of the City's Economic Development Committee. "Focusing its theme on the film and television industry, Doors Open allows residents an opportunity to go backstage in the buildings where over 30,000 of Toronto's creative talent works."

The weekend activities kickoff at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 25 at Ontario Place Cinesphere with the screening of Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience. A labour of love from one of American cinema’s most acclaimed and visually exciting filmmakers, Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life), Voyage of Time represents the filmmaker’s first foray into documentary storytelling. The screening will be followed by a discussion and question and answer session on the history, global impact and evolution of IMAX that will feature Canadian filmmaker and IMAX co-inventor Graeme Ferguson, senior IMAX executives Patricia Keighley and David B. Keighley, York University Professor of Cinema and Media Studies Janine Marchessault and Toronto Star film critic Peter Howell.

On Saturday, May 26, What's The Story Here?, a panel discussion on architecture, film and Toronto, in partnership with Toronto Society of Architects, will include Paul Austerberry, Academy Award and BAFTA Award winner for Best Production Design, Shape of Water.

On Sunday, May 27, Toronto OnScreen, in partnership with ReelCanada, will provide a glimpse into the creative process of renowned architects, filmmakers, art directors and production designers from the Handmaid's Tale, Last Night and other productions.

Toronto City Hall and Nathan Phillips Square will host many activities during the Doors Open Toronto weekend. Visitors to the building can experience the Council Chamber, special exhibitions and rare access to the Mayor's Office and the 27th floor observation deck. Family-friendly activities will include:
• Screenings of short films by ReelAbilities Film Festival: Toronto and Toronto Youth Shorts Film Festival in the Council Chamber
• From Concept to Creation: An Exhibition of Canadian Costume Art and Design, a display of original costumes from notable film and television productions created by members of the Canadian Alliance of Film & Television Costume Arts & Design

Other Doors Open Toronto weekend events will include:
• A showcase of films screened in partnership with more than 30 of Toronto's local film festivals, organizations and historic cinemas
• The second annual Doors Open to Music program featuring live music in six unique spaces
