York Regional Police is proud to host an information session on the common types of frauds and scams affecting York Region residents as part of Fraud Awareness Month.
This Frauducation Session will be held on Tuesday, March 27, 2018, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., at York Regional Police Headquarters located at 47 Don Hillock Drive in the Town of Aurora. Registration to attend the event can be done at yrp.ca/Frauducation. Space is limited.
Investigators with the York Regional Police Financial Crimes Unit will be discussing several commonly reported types of frauds and scam such as: The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and immigration scam, romance scams, social media mining and Bitcoins. Officers will be sharing tips on detecting a scam and how to avoid becoming a victim.
Many frauds and scams have a number of variations, but the end goal is the same: The suspects are attempting to defraud you of your money. The suspects will sound genuine and may have very convincing information. They can be very persuasive, using all types of excuses, explanations and offers to lead you away from using your common sense. Criminals are opportunists, don’t give them the opportunity to make you a victim of crime.
York Regional Police would like to remind the public to never give out personal or financial information over the phone, at your door, or online, unless you have thoroughly verified that the company or person is legitimate. Be suspicious of any situation where someone is looking for money or personal information. When in doubt, call the police.
Anyone interested in more information, who cannot attend the event, can also follow along @YRP on Twitter as we will be live tweeting from the event and answering questions.
If you have been a victim of a fraud and have lost money, report the incident promptly to the York Regional Police Financial Crimes Unit at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 6612. To report frauds where no money has been lost, contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online or by calling 1-888-495-8501. |
