New book garden honours Toronto authors and great books

Councillor Joe Cressy (Ward 20 Trinity-Spadina) will join project partners to officially open the City of Toronto's newest literary landmark, the Toronto Book Garden. This public realm project honours books of literary or artistic merit that are evocative of Toronto and features paving stones engraved with the names of every winning author and title since the Toronto Book Awards were founded in 1974. The paving stones create a pathway of exceptional books and celebrate the city's literary history.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on Sunday, September 24 at 10 a.m., in front of the Queens Quay Terminal Building at 207 Queens Quay W.

“Again and again, our city has been brought to life through the creative writings of our authors," said Councillor Cressy. “Just as their books will live on for future generations of readers, the names of award winning authors will be celebrated forever in the Toronto Book Garden."

"This Garden expands our efforts to improve city streets with new levels of richness and meaning while adding beauty and recognizing outstanding achievement in the literary arts," said Elyse Parker, Director of the Public Realm section of the City's Transportation Services division.

Funding for the garden was provided through Section 37 community improvement contributions from development and in partnership with Harbourfront Centre who provided the space and Waterfront Toronto who were responsible for the design and installation.

“Locating the Toronto Book Garden on the waterfront reinforces the literary hub created by Harbourfront Centre, the International Festival of Authors and The Word On The Street – Toronto," said Ceta Ramkhalawansingh, Chair of the Toronto Book Garden Steering Committee, who initiated this project.

The public can also see this year's Toronto Book Award finalists read from their books at The Word On the Street book and magazine festival on Sunday, September 24 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Harbourfront Centre. The Toronto Book Awards are produced annually by the City of Toronto and the Toronto Public Library. More information is available at: http://www.toronto.ca/bookawards.
