INVESTIGATION INTO HATEFUL GRAFFITI IN MARKHAM
Hate crime investigators with the York Regional Police #5 District Criminal Investigations Bureau are seeking information and witnesses after hateful, anti-Black and anti-Semitic graffiti was found on the walls of three schools in the City of Markham yesterday.
On Sunday, August 20, 2017, York Regional Police responded to three separate calls for reports of hateful graffiti and damage at three different schools located in the area of Highway 7 and Wooten Way in Markham. Investigators believe that the same suspects were responsible for all of the incidents and that they likely occurred between the very late hours of Saturday August 19, 2017 to the early morning hours of Sunday August 20, 2017.
Investigators are asking any witnesses or anyone with information or video surveillance in that area to please come forward.
“Crimes like these are devastating to everyone who takes pride in being part of such a diverse and inclusive community” said Chief Eric Jolliffe. “I am asking our community to come together and share information that will help us find the people responsible for these crimes. I strongly encourage those responsible to seek legal advice and turn themselves in.”
York Regional Police will not tolerate hate crime in any form. These kinds of crimes not only hurt the community that has been targeted, but they hurt us all.
