MomenTO by Canoe invites Torontonians to experience history and nature on the water

MomenTO, a TO Canada with Love program, will take Torontonians to the water with a unique and free canoeing opportunity on the Rouge River on August 20.

"The Rouge River is a waterway of national significance as it defines Toronto's largest park and is within Canada's first national urban park," said Mayor John Tory. "This MomenTO event will provide a special opportunity to experience the human and natural history of Toronto from the compelling perspective of this waterway."

“There is still much to look forward to and enjoy for Canada 150,” said the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage. “MomenTO events provide opportunities to discover the incredible history of this city, including the significance of its rivers and waterways. Let’s take advantage of Canada 150 to learn more about our past, as we look to the future with hope and optimism.”

“The canoe played a significant role in our history. It brought Ontarians together across lakes and rivers, and allowed trade and communities to flourish,” said Eleanor McMahon, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport. “Our government is proud to support MomenTO by Canoe through the Ontario150 program that will give participants the opportunity to reconnect with one another while experiencing the Rouge River’s natural beauty and history."

MomenTO by Canoe, a partnership with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, invites the public to celebrate the natural beauty of the Rouge River and to learn about its significance to Canada on August 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to being able to canoe for free on the river, the public will be able to engage in other on-site activities. Boating equipment and safety professionals will be available to guide the paddling experience. On September 10, Torontonians will be able to have a similar canoeing experience with on-site activities on the Humber River.

The August 20 event will offer a free Parkbus shuttle service to and from Rouge National Urban Park with pick up and drop off locations downtown and at the Scarborough Town Centre. More information about this service is available at https://www.parkbus.ca/rougebeach.

This canoeing event is part of MomenTO, which highlights 150 years of Canadian moments through people, places and events that are significant to the history of Canada and Toronto. It encourages Torontonians to contribute to an online MomenTO timeline, and engages audiences throughout the city at its mobile MomenTO Pop-up Museum and at outdoor film screenings on August 24 and 25. Additional events will include a music series and the continuation of the MomenTO: Toronto's Heritage of Innovation talks series.

"These MomenTO events highlight Toronto's exceptional and enduring contributions to Canadian history,” said Councillor Michael Thompson (Ward 37 Scarborough Centre), Chair of the City's Economic Development Committee.

MomenTO is part of the City's TO Canada with Love program and is produced in partnership with the Province of Ontario’s Ontario150 Program and the Government of Canada. More information is available at www.toronto.ca/momento.
