Today, Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, issued the following statement:
"Our government has been clear about our support for evidence-based approaches to addiction and narcotics abuse. That is why I recently unveiled Ontario's first comprehensive opioid strategy, which will prevent addiction by modernizing prescribing and dispensing; improve access to treatment and expand harm reduction services; and improve data collection so that we better understand the issues we're facing. Ontario has been a leader in Canada in responding to addictions and narcotics abuse, which includes co-hosting a national summit on opioids, which produced more than 150 commitments to action from agencies and governments across the country.
Supervised injection services are one part of our broader strategy. Earlier today, I spoke with the Mayor of Toronto and shared my letter of support to the federal government for the city's proposed supervised injection services and that we will be providing financial support for their proposal. Given the importance of this issue, we are also developing a provincial framework in order to respond to the supervised injection services proposals from Toronto and Ottawa, as well as other municipalities or other applicantsthat may request similar programs for their cities in the future, and will provide full details within the next few weeks.
As Minister of Health and as a physician, I support evidence-based policy making and any initiative around making our communities safer. I believe that community-supported and community-run supervised injection services will not only save lives, but also must be part of a larger strategy for harm reduction and supports for people struggling with addiction." |
