Starting July 1, 2017 YRT/Viva fares will increase annually for the next three years by a weighted average of 2.5 per cent across all fare categories. There will be no changes to cash fares in 2017 or 2018.
“York Region is a mix of both rural and urban areas, and we are committed to providing reliable and convenient transit service to all nine cities and towns,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “The revenues will help pay for transit expansion projects such as servicing the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension and the expansion of the Viva rapid transit network.”
Council also approved updates to fare policies that will provide additional initiatives to increase ridership, including:
-
Promote smart fare technology like PRESTO and a mobile payment app, and eliminate paper fares such as tickets and passes by December 31, 2017
-
Eliminate current two-zone fare upgrades
-
Expand Dial-a-Ride services in low population density areas
-
Generate more non-fare revenue through innovation options and advertising
-
Implement special pass programs including a post-secondary pass, employer transit pass program and low-income pass program
“There are a number of enhancements YRT/Viva is implementing such as expanding Dial-a-Ride service and Frequent Transit Network,” said Town of Richmond Hill Regional Councillor Vito Spatafora, Chair of the Region’s Transportation Services. “By continuing to enhance transit service throughout the region, we are providing better opportunities for people to travel.”
