Festival at Fort York this weekend celebrates organic food and the harvest season
The City of Toronto's Fort York National Historic Site and the Toronto Non-GMO Coalition have partnered to produce and host a two-day socially conscious festival of organic food, music, culture and community this weekend. The festival, called Farm to Fork on Common Ground, will celebrate the harvest season and Canada’s National Organic Week.
The family-friendly festival will take place from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 24 and Sunday, September 25. Admission is free.
"This festival will help attendees learn about environmental and health concerns related to genetically modified food, and celebrate the conscientious farmers and businesses that work hard to be organic and sustainable," said Councillor Mike Layton (Ward 19 Trinity-Spadina).
Featured speakers include Jodi Koberinski (Beyond Pesticides Canada), Taarini Chopra (Canadian Biotechnology Action Network), Rachel Parent (Kids Right to Know), Jacob Kearey-Moreland (Toronto Seed Library), Tanmayo Krupanszky (Canadian Organic Growers), Carolyn Young (Organic Council of Ontario), Maureen Kirkpatrick (The Big Carrot), Montana Jones (heritage sheep breeder), Michael Schmidt (biodynamic raw milk advocate/farmer) and Doug McNish (organic vegan chef/author/restaurateur).
"Attendees will also experience excellent GTA-based bands and performers while enjoying some of the most delicious, sustainably produced food and drink in Canada," said Councillor Michael Thompson (Ward 37 Scarborough Centre), Chair of the Economic Development Committee.
Saturday music performers include The Monkey Bunch, Sugar Brown, Ever Lovin' Jug Band, Pressgang Mutiny and a solo set by Julian Taylor. Sunday's music performers include Hanna Shira Naiman, AHI, Turbo Street Funk and Uke Can Sing.
