Celebrate BEATLES 50 T.O. week at multiple concerts and events
The 50th anniversary of the final Beatles concert in Toronto will be celebrated next week by the City of Toronto. Mayor John Tory has proclaimed the week of August 13 to be BEATLES 50 T.O. Highlights of BEATLES 50 T.O. week include:
Classic Albums Live: Beatles 1966 at Maple Leaf Gardens (August 17 at 8 p.m.)
The City, in partnership with Massey Hall, presents a 50th-anniversary tribute to the Beatles’ last Toronto concert. This rare opportunity to return to the former Maple Leaf Gardens, site of the 1966 concert and now Ryerson's Mattamy Athletic Centre, features Toronto-based Classic Albums Live performing the original set list as well as greatest hits from the Fab Four catalogue. Beatlemania – a modern menswear fashion show on the Beatles style and era at Toronto Men's Fashion Week (August 20 at 6 p.m.)
From their slim-fitting suits to their Chelsea boots, the Beatles and their iconic style continue to influence men's fashion today. Toronto Men's Fashion Week (TOM*), in partnership with the City, will present a modern look at the Beatles era and style featuring 20 Canadian designers at Ryerson's Mattamy Athletic Centre. When the Beatles Rocked Toronto exhibit (running until November 12)
This Market Gallery exhibit explores the Beatles impact on the city through a display of rare images by Toronto photographers who were there in person to document the concerts and the fan's intense love of the group. The exhibit also features rare Beatles artifacts and explores Toronto during the postwar baby boom era through its music scene, a stylized 1960s recreation room and an extensive timeline of Toronto events. The Rattles at the Feast of St. Lawrence festival (August 13 at 2 p.m.)
Beatles tribute band, The Rattles, will perform for free at the Feast of St. Lawrence festival on Market Street (adjacent to the Market Gallery).
The Dreamboats play the Beatles (August 18 at noon)
The Downtown Yonge BIA, as part of the Play the Parks series curated by Massey Hall, will present a free concert with The Dreamboats – a young quartet that plays old fashioned pop and rock 'n' roll. This event includes Beatles tunes and will take place at the College Park Courtyard, 777 Bay St.
The Massey Hall Band plays the Beatles (August 19 at 8 p.m.)
The Massey Hall Band, a 15-piece alternative big band devoted to reinventing, reinterpreting and re-energizing great music, will put a unique and diverse spin on the Beatles with special guests including flamenco-soul singer Amanda Martinez, local legend Jay Douglas and many more at a free concert at Yonge-Dundas Square.
Additional celebratory events will include Movies in St. James Park presenting an outdoor screening of the Beatles 1964 film A Hard Day's Night on August 25 at 9 p.m. The Rattles will also play a pre-screening concert at 8 p.m. The free film and Rattles concert are presented by the St. Lawrence Market Neighbourhood BIA.
