Beatlemania will take over Toronto again this summer with an exhibit, concerts, walking tours, a fashion show and a film screening – all celebrating the Beatles enduring impact on the city – under the banner BEATLES 50 T.O.

“I was lucky enough to see the Beatles perform at Maple Leaf Gardens in the summer of 1966, and 50 years later, Beatlemania lives on,” said Mayor John Tory. "BEATLES 50 T.O. supports the City's new Toronto Music Strategy by celebrating our music history in creative and collaborative ways. I encourage Torontonians to hop on the yellow submarine and celebrate one of the most iconic bands in music history.”
Toronto is the only Canadian city where the Beatles performed three years in a row and is the North American city where they performed the most concerts, six in total. Mayor Tory will proclaim the week of August 13 to 21as BEATLES 50 T.O. Week in Toronto.

Complete event information is available at http://www.toronto.ca/beatles50. Users of social media can follow the excitement on Twitter at #Beatles50TO and on Facebook athttps://www.facebook.com/MarketGallery/.

Highlights of BEATLES 50 T.O. include the following six features:

When the Beatles Rocked Toronto exhibit at the Market Gallery/St. Lawrence Market (June 18 – November 12)
This exhibit explores Toronto during the postwar, baby boom era when a vibrant music scene on Yonge Street and in Yorkville was emerging at the same time the Beatles were exploding on the hit parade. The exhibit includes a stylized recreation room from Don Mills and follow a map identifying the clubs and coffee houses of Yonge Street and Yorkville. Visitors will experience the Beatles through a presentation of rarely seen images by ground-breaking Toronto photographers, as well as displays of memorabilia and media coverage of their whirlwind visits. Tickets will be available online and at the Market Gallery.

Classic Albums Live: Beatles 1966 at Maple Leaf Gardens (August 17, 8 p.m.)
The City of Toronto, in partnership with Massey Hall, presents a reproduction of the Beatles’ last Toronto concert on the show’s 50th anniversary. The Massey Hall Band Plays the Beatles (August 19, 8 p.m.)
The Massey Hall Band, a 15-piece alternative big band devoted to reinventing, reinterpreting and re-energizing great music; will put their spin on the Beatles with special guests at a free live concert at Yonge-Dundas Square.

Walking tours follow the Beatles and cover Yonge Street's music scene in the 1960s (July 14 to September 1)
Heritage Toronto presents walking tours developed by music historians Nicholas Jennings and Piers Hemmingsen. The Jennings' tour, Music History on the Yonge Street Strip, brings the Toronto clubs, halls and music scene to life, while Hemmingsen's walk, When the Beatles Rocked Toronto, sponsored by the City of Toronto, traces the locations and stories that link the Beatles to Toronto. All walks are pay-what-you-can and require pre-registration.
