Conservation efforts in The Regional Municipality of York are saving 26.2 million litres of water, or the amount equal to nearly 11 Olympic-sized swimming pools each and every day. These savings are a result of York Region’s water conservation programs and North America-wide improvements to the efficiency of plumbing fixtures and appliances.
“Water is a limited resource and we encourage all residents to do their part to help conserve water where and whenever possible,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “Here at the Region, we are leading by example and implementing initiatives contained in our Long Term Water Conservation Strategy. By taking these steps the Region is responsibly managing its water consumption and allowing for future growth.”
As demands on this resource evolve, conservation efforts are required for a consistent, sufficient supply. To make certain York Region is using this resource in the most responsible way, a One Water approach has been adopted to ensure water conservation is considered in all aspects of Regional business.
“We are very fortunate to live in a country where water is so prevalent, but that doesn’t mean it can be taken for granted,” said City of Vaughan Regional Councillor Mario Ferri, Vice Chair of Environmental Services. “What we have now is what we are going to have in the future and it’s going to be used by more people. By following our strategy, together with updates to provincial legislation, we’ll stay on track to keep our water use at supportable levels.”
The Long Term Water Conservation Strategy is updated every five years and presents a review of conservation efforts and acts as a guide for future activities. Through 2021, initiatives will include:
-
Exploring the inclusion of water efficiency requirements in new home and business developments within York Region
-
Ensuring full consideration of water conservation in all future Regional infrastructure plans and projects
-
Launching Fusion Gardening, a pilot program in the Village of Kleinburg in the City of Vaughan, for landscape designers, installers, and maintenance staff to teach service sector personnel about designing, installing and maintaining water-efficient landscapes
