Follow these tips to stay warm and prevent cold-weather injuries:
-
Dress appropriately in layers; wear hats, neck warmers, gloves, socks and windproof and waterproof clothing
-
Check your local forecast for weather warnings and limit outdoor activities
-
Recognize the signs of frostbite and hypothermia
Frostbite is a serious health condition causing injury to body tissue from exposure to extreme cold. It most commonly affects the nose, ears, cheeks, chin, fingers and toes. To prevent frostbite, look for the four P’s:
-
Pink – Affected areas will be reddish in colour; this is the first sign of frostbite
-
Pain – Affected areas will become painful
-
Patches – White, waxy feeling patches show up indicating skin is dying
-
Prickliness – The areas will feel numb
Should frostbite set in, get out of the cold and slowly warm up affected areas.
Hypothermia is when body temperature drops dangerously low, starving your brain of oxygen and affecting your ability to think clearly or move well. Don’t ignore shivering and look for the "UMBLES" (mumbles, stumbles or fumbles) which may indicate hypothermia. If you believe someone is suffering from extreme frostbite or hypothermia, call 911 immediately.

Winter Safety Tips
-
Call or visit vulnerable family, friends and neighbours, especially isolated seniors and ensure they have proper supplies to stay warm and dry
-
Keep pets indoors; animals are also at risk during cold weather - more pet information
-
Have an emergency car kit that includes a cell phone, towing company numbers, flashlight, blankets and sand bags, snacks, shovel and booster cables - additional information about winter driving safety
-
Download Markham’s WInter Maintenance Mobile App; available for iOS, Android, and BlackBerry
-
Call Markham's Contact Centre for updates during an emergency or severe weather conditions at 905-477-5530
Appropriate clothing
-
Always wear clothing appropriate for the weather - synthetic and wool fabrics provide better insulation
-
Remember that babies and young children need one more layer of clothing than an adult would wear
-
Dress in layers with a wind resistant outer layer
-
Wear warm socks, mittens, a hat and scarf and be sure to cover your nose
-
If you get wet, change into dry clothing as soon as possible - you lose heat faster when you're wet
Avoid drinking alcohol
-
Alcohol increases blood flow, making you feel warm even though you are losing body heat
Seek shelter or a local warming centre
-
Depending on the wind chill, exposed skin can freeze in minutes
-
Consider rescheduling or limiting time outdoors, especially if it is windy
-
Under the Community Investment Strategy (CIS), York Region provides funding to Inn From the Cold Emergency Winter Shelter and Mosaic Interfaith Out of the Cold Program
