With reports that a number of raccoons in Hamilton and a cow in Perth have tested positive for the rabies virus, The Regional Municipality of York is reminding residents to take extra precautions and keep themselves and their pets away from any stray or wild animals.
While there have been no confirmed cases of rabies-positive animals in York Region this year, residents are advised to avoid feeding or touching any wild or stray animals, ensure their pets have up-to-date vaccinations and keep pets on a leash when outdoors.
The rabies virus affects the central nervous system of mammals, and is transmitted through a bite, lick or scratch from an infected animal. Common symptoms of rabies include loss of coordination and/or aggressive behaviour.
Measures you can take to lower the risk of exposure
Once symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal. Here are some tips to protect yourself and your family:
-
Do not feed, touch or let pets come into contact with wild or stray animals
-
Ensure pets are up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations – it’s the law
-
Keep your pet on a leash at all times when away from home
-
Wildlife-proof your home; store green bins and garbage containers inside the garage or basement
-
Never touch a dead animal with your bare hands
-
If you suspect your pet has come in contact with a rabid animal, contact the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs’ at1-877-424-1300
-
If you have been bitten or scratched by an animal, or come in contact with the saliva of an animal, wash the area immediately with soap and water for at least 15 minutes; contact your doctor and report the incident to York Region Public Health
-
A post-exposure vaccine is available for people who come into contact with a rabid animal
If you observe an animal acting strangely or suspect an animal may have rabies, contact your local animal control department.
