Markham has issued a heat advisory due to the local forecast indicating temperatures above 30 Celsius and humidex readings above 40 for Saturday and Sunday. Residents attending Globalfest and the Games this weekend are encouraged to wear a hat and sunscreen, and stay hydrated.
This Heat Advisory will remain in effect until 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 19, 2015.
During a heat advisory residents are asked to take precautions to avoid suffering heat-related illnesses. Markham recommends the following based on Health Canada guidelines:
□ Drink plenty of cool liquids, especially water, to decrease your risk of dehydration.
□ Spend a few hours in a cool place - a tree-shaded area, swimming facility or an air-conditioned building such as a shopping mall, grocery store, place of worship or public library.
□ Frequently visit friends, neighbours, and elderly family members, especially those who are chronically ill, to make sure they are cool and hydrated.
In addition, City Community Centres, Libraries and Water Play Areas are open for families to enjoy and get some relief from the heat. A list of these facilities follows below.
Markham encourages residents to check the local weather if they are planning on spending time outside and be prepared to stay cool, hydrated and healthy during this period of high temperatures.
