The warm weather is here – time to get together with friends and family, fire up the barbecue and enjoy good food and ice cold drinks. York Region offers tips to keep safety top of mind during your next event.
Serve alcohol responsibly
· Never serve alcohol to guests under the legal drinking age
· Monitor your guests’ drinking, learn to recognize the signs of intoxication and have a plan in place to handle guests who have had too much to drink
· Do not let intoxicated guests drive – it’s your responsibility to ensure your guests get home safely
· Be familiar with Canada’s low-risk alcohol drinking guidelines to know how much is too much
· If you choose to serve alcohol, serve food to slow the rate at which it is absorbed into the bloodstream – the best food items are those high in fat or protein
· Offer non-alcoholic beverage options and do not force alcoholic drinks on guests
· If serving alcohol, provide individual drinks instead of having an open bar and avoid over-pouring – guests usually drink more when they serve themselves
· Keep your surroundings safe by removing tripping hazards and ensuring good lighting
· Serve alcohol after activities requiring physical skill and coordination – guests are more prone to injury if they are impaired
· Give guests time to sober up – stop serving alcohol a few hours or well before guests leave
Stay Sober
Plan to be sober. Limiting your own alcohol intake will allow you to ensure everyone is having a safe and enjoyable time.
