I am absolutely thrilled and proud to live in my hometown, Richmond Hill, Canada's biggest town with a population of 202,000 and natural beauty like lakes and creeks as well as the home of the internationally-renowned David Dunlap Observatory (DDO) where the Black Hole was discovered in 1972. Since its opening in 1935 with the largest optical telescope in Canada and the second largest telescope in the world, the DDO has been a centre for astronomical research in Canada on its 179 acres of land.
As local Councillor, I had the distinct privilege to move for designation of the DDO land, an important site in Richmond Hill with rich history as well as many cultural and natural heritage features, as a heritage site under the Ontario Heritage Act in 2009. To ensure the significant DDO property would continue to be an iconic public place for present and future generations to enjoy, my hometown is undertaking a Master Plan that will address approximately 100 acres of land on the site that was protected from development. I look forward to working with the community to establish a vision for the future DDO Park, including options for ongoing use and management of the heritage buildings on the site. I am confident that the pride of my hometown, the DDO Park with astronomical history, rich cultural and natural heritage features, would be considered as a National Historic Site in the future.
In closing, I am overwhelmed by the fact that my hometown has been recognized by the Conference Board of Canada as one of the top six places to live and work in Canada, and
Richmond Hill has received "A" grade not only once but twice, in 2010 and 2014. Let's celebrate my hometown's proud heritage as well as its bright and smart future!
